This blog contains musings and thoughts about the spiritual side of cartomancy. I will post entries about Tarot, Lenormand, playing cards and related topics from a Christian perspective. Enjoy!

I am a practicing Christian. (No I DO NOT think you are going to Hell because you are not a Christian. I am also a universalist; Christianity is the software I choose to use to access the great spiritual computer. There is a lot of software out there and I have added much to my faith by studying others. There are many paths to God; I choose Christianity.)

Finally beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is pleasing, whatever is pure, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
– Philippians 4:8

Cartomancy for Life

Cartomancy is a means of divination. My definition of divination is: The seeking of the divine by intuition, insight, signs and symbols. Hence this blog comes from from a Christian perspective.

The Bible stands against false prophets and the worship of other gods before God. It doesn’t say anything about with God…the Bible also tells us that we should pray and that we should look for His answers in signs… Look at the Old Testament-you couldn’t throw a stone back then without hitting one of God’s oracles or prophets.

The Bible speaks about divination being rejected, even punishable by death, but the Bible warns against fortune telling: telling the future. The real translation of divination is not fortune telling. I have never been able to predict what was going to happen in the future, nor have I ever met anyone who could accurately predict it through the use of cartomancy However, I have found that the cards can give me incredible insight into where I am right now in my relationship with God and His world. “What do I need to know right now?” or some variation of this question that is specific to what you or your querent is currently working on in her or his life is the best way to approach cartomancy. This is the question that I encourage querents to ask before a reading. There will be more on this in the Questions and Ethics post.

When we approach a reading we really already know the answers to our questions; the cards are simply a catalyst to allow us to bring those thoughts to the surface.
The primary purpose of divination is not to tell us original and final truths, but to evoke the truth that waits within us. Tarot reading should be treated in much the same way as devotional literature or myths. Being often metaphorical or mythical they may point to the truth without being true themselves. Ask yourself: What does this say to me? How should this affect my approach to life?
-adapted from Infinity in Your Hand by William H. Houff

“But the anointing which ye have received abide the in you, and ye need not that any man should teach you: but as the same anointing teaches you all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.” – 1 John 2:27 see you already know the answers. God arranges circumstances, like a card reading, to bring things to your attention.

“No man can reveal aught to you but that which lies half-asleep in the dawning of your knowledge.” – Kahlil Gibran

Many books speak of an inner guide or teacher. Some disembodied spirt or being of a higher level that you can rely on for information. The Great Work or goal in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn (an organization intimately involved with the foundations of modern Tarot among other things-Most were Christians by the way) was to obtain conversation with the Holy Guardian Angel. In my practice I rely on Jesus, Mary, my guardian angel or a saint to be my inner teacher; they make things easy. You can’t get any higher beings than these! If I am having trouble with an interpretation it is usually because I have forgotten to pray for help from my inner guide – Jesus. I pray before, during and after a reading.

In The Seat of the Soul Gary Zukav talks about help from inner guides and says, “Truth that comes from your higher self is mostly effective for you. Truth that comes from beings in advance of yourself is true for anyone who comes into contact with it.” God gives us private revelations that are for us alone as well as revelations for others. We must be careful to distinguish between these two things. Wars have been fought and schisms have formed by people taking their private revelations and interpreting them as being true for everyone. Pray to God about making this clear to you.

Cast a spread asking, “What do I need to know about divination right now?”
